Dawit Isaac is a Swedish journalist imprisoned in Eritrea for having published letters from the opposition. He came to Sweden as a refugee from Ethiopia in 1987, settled down close to Gothenburg and became a citizen of Sweden. When Eritrea got independent Dawit moved back and founded a newspaper. Eritrea is a one-party state. In October 2000 oppositional members of the ruling party wrote an open letter to the party asking for a democratic dialoque. Dawit published the letter and other protests and together with the author of the letter and many other journalists he was imprisoned in September 2001. After pressure from the Swedish ambassador, the support committee and invididuals Dawit Isaac was released from prison in Asmara on November 19, 2005 but was shortly thereafter imprisoned again. He is still in prison.
